Documentary Short Film

Real stories told with care, context, and purpose.

Short documentary films focus on people, place, and process. They are built to explore meaningful stories with depth and restraint, allowing subjects and environments to speak for themselves.

This work has been produced in the Sierra Nevada, on rivers throughout California, and for organizations working at a national level.

  • Highlight mission, advocacy, or impact

Selected documentary work

River Advocacy

This short documentary explores the work of river advocate Dave Steindorf and his long involvement with American Whitewater. Set in California’s Sierra Nevada, the film examines the balance between hydropower generation, ecosystem health, recreation, and community engagement.

Through Dave’s personal story, the film highlights how long-term relationships, science, and persistence can restore river flows and protect aquatic life.

South Silver Creek

This story exists in two related documentary pieces.

The first follows a group of international whitewater kayakers as they navigate the South Fork of Silver Creek during high water, documenting both the physical challenge and the legacy of exploration on one of California’s most demanding runs.

The second looks back at the late 1990s, when local kayakers from the American River completed the first descent of the South Fork of Silver Creek. Together, the films trace the evolution of exploration, access, and community around South Silver.

South Silver, The First Descent was accepted to the Paddling Film Festival and shortlisted in 2022.

Approach and experience

Documentary work requires patience, trust, and the ability to work unobtrusively. My background in outdoor environments and long-form storytelling allows me to follow stories as they unfold rather than forcing them into a predetermined narrative.

The focus is on accuracy, context, and respect for the subject.

When documentary short film makes sense

Organizations and individuals typically consider documentary work when:

  • The story cannot be told effectively in a short promotional format
  • The subject benefits from depth and context
  • Authenticity and credibility are critical
  • The film is intended to have a longer lifespan
